As a physical therapist and endurance athlete myself, I love helping athletes go beyond injury prevention and rehab—and into performance territory. Mental strength is part of that. What’s Really Holding You Back?
For most triathletes, cyclists, and distance runners, it’s not just the legs that give out—it’s the mental chatter that says, “This is too hard,” or “I can’t hold this pace.” Doubt, anxiety, and fear of re-injury (especially if you’ve been hurt before) can slow you down before your muscles even get the chance.

You wouldn’t show up to a marathon with zero long runs under your belt, right? The same goes for your mental game. Just like strength training or endurance workouts, mindset training takes consistency.
One way I incorporate this into my physical therapy sessions is by helping athletes recognize their unique mental barriers—especially post-injury. That might be fear of re-injury, hyper-fixating on pain, or just a loss of trust in their body. We work through those with tools like gait analysis, return-to-run testing, and a rehab plan that’s designed to rebuild not just physical strength—but confidence.
